SUMMARY:Presenting at the North Carolina Public Health Association Conference
DESCRIPTION:Every Day is Someone’s Emergency: Infant and Young Child Feeding Safety in Disasters and Daily Practice. \nMelinda Delisle and Corey Graywood are presenting at the NCPHA Fall Educational Conference. It is a joint workshop of the Emergency Preparedness and Response section and the Women’s and Children’s Health section\, which is the whole point. Those two rooms do not meet often enough. \nSAFE is the national IYCF-E implementation of Breastfeeding Family Friendly Communities. BFFC is the blue skies strategy\, the slow work of building communities where feeding a baby is everyone’s business. This is the gray skies work\, for the days that strategy gets tested. \nThe conference theme this year is From the Mountain to the Coast: Public Health for all North Carolinians. This state’s public health workforce is the room this has to land in. Emergency infant feeding is not a specialty topic in North Carolina anymore. After Helene it is a job description. And the title says the rest of it: the house fire on a Tuesday counts too. \nThe Fall Educational Conference runs September 30 through October 2 at the Embassy Suites Convention Center in Concord. Registration and the full agenda are on the NCPHA website.

DESCRIPTION:When the System Stops: Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergencies in Appalachia. \nBrandi Harrison\, Jayne Carpenter\, and Love Anderson are on the Day Two panel at the 6th Appalachian Breastfeeding Conference. \nSAFE is the national IYCF-E implementation of Breastfeeding Family Friendly Communities. BFFC is the blue skies strategy\, the slow work of building communities where feeding a baby is everyone’s business. This is the gray skies work\, for the days that strategy gets tested. \nAppalachia has already lived this. When the roads wash out and the power stays off for a week\, the formula supply chain and the lactation support system fail at the same time\, and the families furthest up the holler feel it first. Every emergency plan we have seen assumes someone else is handling the babies. This session is about what a community can put in place before the water rises. \nRegistration and the full program are on the Appalachian Breastfeeding Network website.

DESCRIPTION:The US Breastfeeding Committee owns this constellation. We facilitate it. \nSAFE is the national IYCF-E implementation of Breastfeeding Family Friendly Communities. BFFC is the blue skies strategy\, the slow work of building communities where feeding a baby is everyone’s business. This is the gray skies work\, for the days that strategy gets tested. \nConstellations are how USBC does collective work. Member organizations commit to a shared piece of the national agenda and meet over time to actually move it. Facilitating the infant and young child feeding in emergencies constellation means this conversation now has a permanent home inside the national coalition instead of living in a handful of people’s inboxes. \nParticipation is open to US Breastfeeding Committee member organizations. If your organization is a USBC member and you want a seat at this table\, contact USBC for an invitation. If you are not a member yet\, that is the first step\, and it is worth taking.

This is the gray skies work\, for the days that strategy gets tested. \nThe summit theme is 10 Years of Impact: Learning\, Improving and Sharing\, and it puts community and clinical providers in the same room — which is exactly where this work has to travel. Virginia is not our state\, and that is the point. What we learned in North Carolina after Helene stops being useful the moment it stays in North Carolina. \nThe summit runs October 25 and 26 in Richmond. Registration is through VCU\, and the venue has not been announced yet.
