IYCF-E Virtual Trainings – Nourishing Resilience 3

Nourishing Resilience # 3

Mitigating Risks – Donations; Safer Formula Feeding

This third training session focuses on identifying and reducing risks related to infant and young child feeding in emergencies, with an emphasis on water safety, sanitation, and managing donations. Participants work through a scenario to apply practical skills for supporting caregivers who face unsafe water, limited resources, and mixed feeding. The session reviews how to clean and sanitize feeding and pumping equipment in challenging conditions, explores common barriers families encounter, and discusses the broader needs that must be addressed to support safe feeding. It also covers how unsolicited donations can create significant risks, how to communicate effectively with communities about safer alternatives, and how predatory marketing can undermine emergency feeding efforts. The goal is to help responders provide clear, safe guidance while minimizing harm.

Our newest project, the SAFE Team, revealed national gaps in infant and young child feeding during emergencies. Our core mission of systems change uses the Ten Steps to a Breastfeeding Family Friendly Community to train and educate non-lactating community members to better welcome families, normalize breastfeeding, and prepare for safe infant feeding in emergencies. Together, we build environments where every family can thrive.
